About California State University, San Marcos

Founded in 1989 as the 20th campus of the California State University, Cal State San Marcos is rapidly growing and responding to the needs of the region. The growing student enrollment is currently about 10,000 students with an expected student population of over 20,000 at maturity. The university, located 30-miles north of downtown San Diego and San Diego State University, teaches and prepares baccalaureate and masters degree graduates for careers in the life science arena. Recently, the university added new degrees and programs in biotechnology, biochemistry, physics and nursing. Core sciences and business units, from the College of Business Administration, are the basic competencies of the biotechnology programs that result in well-prepared, lab-ready, business-knowledgeable graduates for the region’s biotech industry.
In addition to a successful B.S. in Biotechnology, a Professional Science Master’s in Biotechnology combines master’s level science, professional preparation, core MBA business courses, and an internship/work experience. It serves students and employers who want interdisciplinary skills beyond a B.S. degree but not an MBA or Ph.D.
Located in the cradle of biotechnology with over 500 biotech/biomed/biopharma companies, our biotech programs are designed from an industry perspective and input. The university is aligned with other CSU-related programs and CSUPERB (CSU Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology) for broader exposure and significant student opportunities.
