About BioOhio
BioOhio, founded in 1987 as Edison BioTechnology Center and formerly Omeris, is a non-profit organization designed to build and accelerate bioscience industry, research, and education in Ohio.As Ohio's bioscience membership and development organization, we are focused on networking the distributed and outstanding bioscience assets of Ohio to accelerate growth of a globally competitive bioscience industry.
These assets include:
• 4 of the nation’s top 15 pediatric hospitals, 3 of the top 20 heart and heart surgery centers, and 4 of the top 20 nationally ranked teaching hospitals; • The Cleveland Clinic, the top cardiology hospital in the U.S. and ranked 4th overall; • Columbus-headquartered Battelle Memorial Institute, the largest global contract research organization; • more than 10% of Fortune 35 companies—including Cardinal Health and Procter & Gamble, both leaders in biosciences; • academic research institutions that rank among the top nationally in technology conversion and commercialization; and • government and public sector support of the biosciences, such as Ohio's $1.6 billion Third Frontier Project.
Innovative Ohio bioscience companies—many of them members of BioOhio—revitalize our state’s economy while developing critical tools, treatments, and technologies that benefit the world. BioOhio is a focal point for Ohio's bioscience and biotechnology community, providing networking and educational forums, developing communications and information resources, addressing public policy, and analyzing resource and funding issues.
Currently, BioOhio is focused on four strategic areas:
1. Company and Capital Formation 2. Asset-based Company and Partnership Attraction 3. Workforce Development and Deployment 4. Community and Awareness Development
Headquartered in Columbus, BioOhio is supported by the Thomas Edison Program of the Ohio Department of Development and member contributions. BioOhio regional business development affiliates are located in Athens (Edison Biotechnology Institute), Cincinnati (BIO/START), Cleveland (BioEnterprise), and Columbus (TechColumbus).
BioOhio also is affiliated with BIO, which represents biotechnology companies in the United States and in 33 other nations, and AdvaMed, the advanced medical technology association.
