About Memphis Bioworks™ Foundation

The Memphis Bioworks Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to leveraging the region’s existing strengths to establish Memphis as a world leader in the development and commercialization of biomedical technologies. The Memphis Bioworks Foundation was created from an alliance of public, private, academic and governmental organizations united together to build upon the existing foundation of bioscience organizations in Memphis.

Memphis’ assets give the city a distinctive niche in the marketplace. The city is already a world center for orthopedics and musculoskeletal science. Medtronic, Smith & Nephew, Wright Medical and Campbell Clinic are world leaders that call Memphis home, making the city the number one translational place for orthopedic and musculoskeletal business.

Memphis already has a strong medical research foundation due to organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Methodist University Hospital, UT Health Science Center, and Memphis College of Optometry. Already called America’s Distribution Center, Memphis is swiftly becoming known as America’s Logistics Center. The city has the world's largest air cargo airport, the third largest rail center in the country, and the fourth largest inland port in the United States. It is also the home of FedEx.

The Memphis Bioworks Foundation is implementing a 10-year, $500 million plan for achieving its vision for the future. Its efforts are focused on three key areas necessary to establish Memphis as a hub of bioscience growth: education, infrastructure and entrepreneurship.

In order to attract the best biomedical organizations to Memphis, the Memphis Bioworks Foundation is helping create extremely skilled and motivated employees by raising the standards of science and technology curriculum in area schools and creating a continual learning environment to people in the field of biotechnology no matter what their career level. In order to achieve this, the Memphis Bioworks Foundation has established:

  • The “Bioworks Career Ladder” – a series of educational programs and outreach efforts among local colleges and universities.
  • Co-founded the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, a charter school that aims to produce lifelong learners, critical thinkers, effective communicators and productive members of the global community (www.memphissciencacademy.org).
  • Intern program.

    Memphis already has an impressive infrastructure in place but needs world class biofacilities. In order to achieve this goal, the Memphis Bioworks Foundation is in the first stage of developing the UT-Baptist Research Park (www.utbaptistresearchpark.org), an impressive 15-acre state-of-the-art campus designed to offer global businesses the highly specialized, world-class biomedical facilities they demand. The Park’s 1.4 million square feet of laboratory, research, education, and commercial space will provide for virtually every type of bioscience business need. Additionally, the campus will provide space for Memphis businesses to expand, entrepreneurs to establish a presence and for international businesses to locate facilities or office operations.

    It is impossible to establish Memphis as a global leader in biomedical technologies if ideas and innovations never receive the support they need to come to fruition. The Memphis Bioworks Foundation helps drive the entrepreneurial cycle by fostering research, helping partner entrepreneurs with the scientists creating medical breakthroughs, helping entrepreneurs attract capital and acting as an incubator for new companies on the long road to the commercialization of new products.
