MILLS RIVER, N.C. – Germany-based Raumedic, which manufactures polymer components for the medical industry, is planning to cap off its first year in western North Carolina with a spate of hiring in 2017, WRAL reported this morning.

Since its founding in 2004, the company has tripled in size. In November, Raumedic hired its 700th employee, the company said on its website.

Over the course of 2016, the company hired 125 people. In January, Raumedic opened its 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Mills River, N.C., which now serves as the company’s U.S. headquarters. There are currently 55 employees at the N.C. site. But, that’s about to change. WRAL reports Raumedic plans to go on a hiring spree over the next few years and expand the number of employees to about 172 people. The positions are expected to have an average salary of $55,000. On its website, Raumedic currently lists six open positions for its Milles River facility. Positions include extrusion process engineer, material handler, machine operator and an application engineer for medical tubing.

The Mills River site officially came online in April and serves as a production and development center for customer-specific polymer components and systems, including 13,000 feet “of the most cutting-edge clean room” production, the company said. Although the company celebrated its opening in April, the site was operational in January, when production started.

Raumedic continues to improve the facility. When it opened, the German company had invested $11 million, but said total investments at the North Carolina site would equal about $27 million by 2022.

Raumedic said at the time it opened its U.S. headquarters, that a site there would shorten the time it takes for the medical products it manufactures to reach its North American clients. The North Carolina facility is responsible for multi-component injection molding with hard-hard and hard-soft connections, micro injection molding, insert molding, fully automated assembly systems, micro extrusion with an internal diameter of 0.1 mm and multiple layers in the tubing wall including X-ray tubing or film blowing, according to the company.

Products Raumedic manufactures include tubing, molded parts, catheters and other components for the medical and pharmaceutical industry. In addition, Raumedic also develops high-precision pressure measurement systems with microchip technology for use in the areas of neuromonitoring, urology and traumatology. The company processes medical-grade thermoplastic polymers and silicones at three facilities in Germany and the Mills River site in North Carolina.
