One Key to a Problem-Free Firing Is Dignity

An at-will employee can be fired at any time and for any legal reason, and that employee is also free to quit at any time. At-will employees have no contractual or legal obligation to their employer. But employment lawyers say that through the years, employees have gained many protections under state and federal discrimination laws that make it illegal for companies to fire a worker because of race, religion, gender, age, or country of origin. In some states, workers are protected in regards to sexual orientation or medical condition or for acting as company whistle-blowers.
