Made-In-Massachusetts Skincare Company Is Growing With Cummings Properties Silk Therapeutics Sells Out On Hsn And Expands In Medford

MEDFORD, April 3, 2017 - Silk Therapeutics is almost tripling its space from 3,300 square feet to 9,800 square feet at Cummings Properties' 196 Boston Avenue building in Medford. Business has been brisk for the company, which debuted its limited-edition LabGrab skincare line on HSN earlier this month and sold out.

Silk Therapeutics develops natural skincare products using its proprietary activated liquid silk as the core ingredient. All products are made on site in Medford, using no more than eight ingredients per product.

The Woburn-based commercial real estate firm's in-house construction team has already delivered the expanded clean-tech area for development and manufacturing and has begun work on the office area, which is scheduled for delivery June 1.

The new space features exposed wood beams, open ceilings, and specialty finishes, including a bright color scheme that matches Silk's purple product packaging, according to Senior Account Manager Tony Spencer of Cummings Properties.

"Not only were we able to keep all of the company's business operations under one roof, but we are in the process of making customized modifications to the space to meet the needs of a company whose image and appearance are of primary importance," said Spencer.

The company was cofounded by Tufts University alums Drs. Gregory Altman, CEO, and Rebecca (Horan) Lacouture, COO. Lacouture served as senior director of clinical research and development at Altman's first company, Serica Technologies, which was acquired by global pharmaceutical company Allergan. The pair continued working together at Allergan, before leaving to start Silk Therapeutics in 2013. They hold several silk biomaterials patents.

"Over the last ten years Greg and Beck have been principles in several companies that have leased with Cummings Properties," according to Spencer. "It is gratifying to be a part of their newest venture and to support their continued success."

Altman is scheduled to appear live on HSN again in May.

Cummings Properties' portfolio of more than 10 million square feet of prime space accommodates offices, healthcare facilities, labs, restaurants, retail storefronts, warehouses, co-working spaces, executive suites, and more. With a portfolio of this size and variety, the firm can meet almost any commercial real estate need between 150 square feet and 300,000 square feet. Its in-house experts in design, construction, and property management offer "one-stop shopping" for leasing clients.
