Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas P. Bostick, Head Of Intrexon's Environment Sector, Elected To National Academy Of Engineering
GERMANTOWN, Md., Feb. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Intrexon Corporation (NYSE: XON), a leader in the engineering and industrialization of biology to improve the quality of life and health of the planet, today announced that Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas P. Bostick Ph.D., P.E., Senior Vice President and Head of Intrexon's Environment Sector, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Dr. Bostick was elected for development of new approaches to hurricane protection and for his leadership of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and many other significant positions throughout his military career.
As one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, selection for membership in the NAE honors individuals' outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education and to the pioneering of new and developing technology fields or major advancements in traditional fields of engineering.

"This distinction represents the culmination of a rewarding career with the U.S. Army where I was able to utilize engineering to address some of the Nation's toughest infrastructure, water and environmental challenges. As part of Intrexon, I have been able to continue this commitment as we seek to develop and deploy bio-based solutions engineered for the protection and remediation of the environment."
As the 53rd U.S. Army Chief of Engineers and the Commanding General of U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) he served as the senior military officer overseeing and supervising most of the Nation's civil works infrastructure and military construction, hundreds of environmental protection projects, as well as managing 34,000 civilian employees and military personnel in over 110 countries worldwide. His responsibilities at USACE included the operation and maintenance of the Nation's waterways and ports, the regulatory permit program to protect, restore and enhance wetland areas, environmental preservation and restoration projects, the Nation's largest hydroelectric power programs, as well as emergency response missions supporting the efforts of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Lt. Gen. Bostick helped lead the response and recovery effort to Hurricane Sandy, which included over $5 billion in USACE projects. Additionally Congress included in the Disaster Relief Appropriation Act the requirement to conduct a comprehensive study to address the flood risks of vulnerable coastal populations in areas that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Lt. Gen. Bostick and his USACE team, along with leaders from around the world, completed the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) on time and under budget in January 2015. The NACCS can be used by communities to determine their flood risk, and then plan and implement strategies in collaboration with others to reduce their risk now and into the future.
In addition to his election to the NAE, Dr. Bostick was also recently selected for the American Society of Civil Engineers prestigious Opal Award for "demonstrated leadership of public sector projects and/or programs" in government service. He graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and later returned to the Academy to serve as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He holds Master's degrees in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and a Doctorate in Systems Engineering from George Washington University.
