SAN DIEGO, March 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Intrexon Corporation (NYSE: XON), a leader in the engineering and industrialization of biology to improve the quality of life and health of the planet, today announced the appointment of Andy Bass as Senior Vice President, Consumer Sector, which will henceforth do business as BioPop. Andy brings extensive experience in life sciences and consumer product development to Intrexon.  Most recently he co-founded and served as Chief Executive Officer of Biological & Popular Culture, Inc. (BioPop), now a wholly owned subsidiary of Intrexon and a consumer biotechnology company selling products in more than 20 countries. BioPop created an original consumer product category by merging natural biological processes with art and design principles.  Andy and his team's work has been featured in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, sold at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and covered by The New York Times, Wired and Fast Company among others.  Prior to BioPop, Andy was Director of Business Development at Cellectis where he led deal development for genome customization products and services.  He also held sales and business development positions at ThermoFisher, Sigma-Aldrich, Invitrogen and Research Genetics.  Andy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Intrexon's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Randal J. Kirk commented, "Andy shares our passion for innovating and bringing to market products that excite and amaze consumers, and he has the skills to make these a reality.  Although biotech's reach into the consumer sector has thus far been minimal, we have long believed that applications of engineered biology have the potential to revolutionize multiple consumer product categories, while spawning entirely new classes of valuable product.  Andy is first and foremost a product designer and developer and has shown an ability to translate biological science into new product categories that will provide us with a leadership position in what should become a very significant commercial sector, with products that we shall market ourselves as well as in partnership with leading consumer-facing companies."

"Andy joins fellow sector leads Sekhar Boddupalli (Food), Thomas Bostick (Environment) and Robert Walsh (Energy), while we are in late-stage recruitment of a new head of our Health Sector, so we look forward, very soon, to having a full complement of very able leaders who are responsible for strategy and commercialization across all five of Intrexon's commercial sectors," said Kirk.

"I'm honored to join the Intrexon team and lead its efforts in the consumer space," said Bass.  "I have known RJ for six years and am continually inspired by his ideas and forward thinking.  This extraordinary company is embracing science to create groundbreaking products rooted in synthetic biology."

BioPop's initial portfolio includes Dino Pet® and the companion animal genetic preservation and cloning services of ViaGen Pets.  Additionally, BioPop will manage the development of next-generation skin and home care products enabled by several of Intrexon's platforms, including ActoBiotics®, Exosome-based biological delivery systems, and lantibiotic-based anti-infectives.
