So, you worked in retail when you were nineteen to help buy books and other college supplies. While that is great, is it relevant to the position you are applying for? Remember that a hiring manager is only going to spend a few seconds with your resume before deciding if you are a good potential candidate or not. Cut out experience and other elements of your resume that aren’t relevant to the job. Make sure that every word of your resume shows you as the best candidate for the position in question.
2. Use keywords.
Find out what key phrases are most important for the job in question. If the job ad says they are looking for someone proficient in Excel, use that exact phrase on your resume. Not only can it make it more obvious to human eyes that you are a great match for the company, but it helps make sure your resume comes up for companies using software to sift through resumes. Use the same language as the company's job description, and make sure you are including relevant key phrases.
3. Don't be afraid to think outside the box.
Say you are applying for a job as the personal assistant to a chef and you once took cooking classes. That experience and knowledge of what your prospective employer does can give you a leg up on the competition. If you have experience relevant to the position that doesn’t fit within the confines of the standard resume boxes, make room, even if it is in your cover letter. You want a professional edge over other applicants, so make use of anything in your arsenal!
